Staycations

With soaring gas prices and a crashing economy, the summer of 2008 may be the perfect season to experience a new concept called the "staycation." This is just a way of saying you'll be staying home for vacation and planning short, perhaps even daylong trips rather than a week long vacation to Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

About 1.3 percent fewer Americans are expected to fly this summer than last summer, according to the Air Transport Association. In contrast to destination vacations you will actually get the most bang for your buck staying at home. Many parents, in fact, find the "staycation" more relaxing than going away, especially if they have young children.

Staying at home for a vacation can be tranforming and restorative and fits easier into a lot of people's schedules.
It is easy to fall into a bad routine though, so here are a few suggestions to keep you on track for a successful "staycation:"
. Plan ahead like you would for a regular vacation
. Choose activities that get you out of the house
. Try something new
. Do not schedule any chores
. Take lots of pictures and videos
. Stay "unplugged" from your computer and television

The "staycation" is a chance to rediscover special places in your hometown and surrounding communities that will please the whole family. There are plenty of ways to find culture and excitement such as a picnic in a park, a day at the races, a local festival, free concerts, arts and crafts fairs, fishing in a local pond, or running a 5K charity race. Be tourist for a day in your own town and schedule a walking history tour, visit the local museum, shop at a farmer's market or volunteer at a senior center. There is something to do right in the place where you live without spending much money.

If you really need a night away from home, book a local hotel room, maybe with a poolside view, proving a change in your everyday routine doesn't have to break your budget.

There are many benefits to a "staycation" - one of them being a greater appreciation for the place where you live.
